It was reported yesterday that Samsung is working on a rollable smartphone for this year, or a third foldable. That device was reported to carry the ‘Diamond’ codename. Well, it seems like that information was off. According to a new piece of info, project ‘Diamond’ is actually the Galaxy S23, not a rollable smartphone.

Project ‘Diamond’ stands for the Galaxy S23, not Samsung’s first rollable smartphone

Ice Universe, a well-known tipster, started this rumor train, but since then, he deleted his tweet. That on its own suggests he was not accurate. Before he delete his tweet, however, Ross Young, a well-known display analyst, revealed the information regarding the Galaxy S23.

So, it seems like Samsung’s first rollable smartphone will have to wait until at least 2023. Ross Young did say, a while back, that the company’s first rollable was supposed to launch at the end of 2022, but Samsung decided to push it back to 2023.

Samsung is not the only company that is working on a rollable smartphone, of course. OPPO actually announced the world’s first rollable phone at the end of 2020. That device was working and everything, but it never became available to purchase.

OPPO is also working on a rollable smartphone

OPPO did say that it wasn’t ready for primetime, but promised that it is working on a commercially-available rollable. So, it remains to be seen which company will make that happen first. As things stand, it will be either OPPO or Samsung.

In regards to the Galaxy S23, well, that’s a device, or should we say devices, that we’ll hear much more about in the coming months. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S23 series in the first quarter of next year.

Foldable smartphones managed to become quite popular in the last couple of years. Samsung is expected to sell a lot more of them this year than it did last year. The entire foldable smartphone market is expected to grow quite a bit.

Having said that, many people see rollable smartphones as a more ideal solution. They won’t be as thick as foldables are, and simply seem like a more elegant solution. Whatever the case may be, it will be interesting to compare foldable and rollable smartphones.
